"Mates" is, as already guessed, a song about friends, very special friends who are keen on snatching everybody else's wives. You find them in small cliques, in small towns where the it-girls are few and the sharing of them seems common-place. Its a gnarling little spastic and frantic tune, with a big chorus, maybe a bit nerdy in the David Byrne manner.
lyrics
MATES
She’s Not Sharing A Lot With Her Spouse
He Has No Share In Keeping The House
Although Being The One Confided In
He’d Rather Keep Himself From Imagining
What’s Behind Closed Doors Next Doors
What’s Inside The Neighbours’ Drawers
Who Is Lying And Lying Between Whose Thighs
Who Is Coming But Doesn’t Arrive
Refrain:
They’re His Mates Help Him Out
Just In Case, Stick Around
They Won’t Wait Or Hesitate
And Will Snatch His Ex For Real
That’s Why They’re Mates
Pick Up The Slack, Get Her Laid
Don’t Look Back
And In The End He Will Find
Who’s Been Closest To His Wife
It’s Like Stains Resulting From Squirt
Wants To Rub 'em Off Of Her Skirt
Although Washing Her Dirty Laundry Here
Keep Her Griming With Lust Somewhere Else
In The Whiff Of The Foulmouth Confessing
Of The Wives Straying 'Round Having Passions
Don’t Be Miffed When Brown-Nosed
Get An Average Dose,
Where The Labor Becomes An Obsession
And The Peasants Are Doing His Head In
She’s Done This, Then He’s Done That
At The End Of The Day, Who’s The Twat?
Who's Not Worth The Wait Nor Gaining Weight
But He Left Her With A Brat
Which Might Be Better For The Worst
Which Might (not) Safe Him From Being Cursed
Which Might Look Like A Date Or Caking Her
Which Might Feel Just As Safe As His Mates
Refrain:
They’re His Mates Help Him Out
Just In Case, Stick Around
They Won’t Wait Or Hesitate
And Will Snatch His Ex For Real
That’s Why They’re Mates
Pick Up The Slack, Get Her Laid
Don’t Look Back
And In The End He Will Find
Who’s Been Closest To His Wife
